Of course, log furniture got it beginnings in the early pioneer days when there was likely a shortage of fine craftsmen that made the furniture like what was often brought over from Europe. Some American settlers were lucky enough or rich enough to be able to bring over furniture and other belongings they had over there, but many settlers arrived with nothing or little more than the clothing on their backs. They built their homes, their furniture, barns and fences out of the timber that was all around them.
Although there were fine furniture craftsmen that immigrated to the states, they were more likely to set up shops in some of the growing townships and even later the cities that developed. It was difficult for those that lived in the very rural areas to order furniture from far away. This prompted many settlers to learn to handcraft their own furniture out of sheer necessity. As the years went by, many of them could make really beautiful log furniture that would endure for generations.
Settlers used the trees that surrounded to make their furniture. They usually chose softer wood that was more easily to manipulate like birch, white or red cedar, hickory and pine. They would use harder woods like oak as well. Rustic log furniture can still be purchased today from those that handcraft it or it can be purchased factory made depending on preference. People today use log furniture to outfit their cabins, lodges or log homes. It is as beautifully made as ever and even sturdier and longer lasting than the settlers made it.
